“Look for what you want to see in the world. If you can’t find it, create it.”
Based on Lopez Island, Washington, Joshua A Eide is a mixed media artist. Finding inspiration from the world around him, his works are created to provide a context within which to explore our surroundings- be they micro maps of islands, literary/ historical amalgams in scroll form, or videos of the typically unseen.
AZIMUTH SALISH SEA: Mappi Mundi
With the Salish Sea as its center, this piece stretches the world out from around its hub, the distortion of the land increasing with distance. Buffeted by the Four Seasonal Winds, Azimuth Salish Sea seeks to establish the eponymous waterways’ place on earth, showing that no matter where we are, our own version of place will bring our closest world into focus, leaving myth and belief to influence our view of the rest of our terrestrial neighbors.
SEA SCROLL: A Perpetual Calendar
Sea Scroll is a private work, detailing the years of adventures between the Artist and Significant Other. A build-up of charts, literary references, personal journal entries, and esoterica, Sea Scroll is a 20’ vertical scroll, mounted on linen.
CRAB CAM
Every once in a while, an idea so simple comes that one wonders why it hadn’t been done before. Well, it had- but my results were still the most interesting I had seen!
The Darger War: Placeless Space in Timeless Time
The Darger War was the first piece conceived and created by Joshua A Eide. Using vintage NatGeo maps and techniques first used by Henry Darger, this piece seeks to lay out the struggle of humanity against nature in the form of a panorama scroll: as the dawn rises, humanity, in all its worst, most native forms, rises to suppress the natural world through violence and bloodshed. In excess of 8’ in length, this scroll is meant to be viewed as a panorama surrounding the observer.
